Guwahati: As rain continues to disrupt normalcy in the northeast region, for the fourth day, at least thirty-one people in Assam and Meghalaya have lost their live in floods and landslides over the last two days. Around 19 lakh people have been affected so far in 28 districts in Assam, while one lakh have shifted to relief camps, according to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Among the causalities, 12 died in Assam and 19 in Meghalaya.
Animals in the Kaziranga National Park including three hog deer and one leopard, who were trying to move to highlands for shelter, were hit be speeding vehicles on the national highway which passes through the park, according to the Indian Express.
Several rivers in Assam including Brahmaputra, Beki, Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari and Jiya Bhorol are flowing dangerously above the controlled mark.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said in a statement that the continuous rains had led to the collapse of roads, injuries and deaths. He added that the chairmans of the recently formed regional committees were assessing the situation. Sangma had earlier met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and explained the situation, and has requested assistance from the Centre.
Officials said that this is the highest recorded rainfall in Meghalaya's Mawsynram and Cherrapunji since 1940.
