Lucknow: Lemon today costs Rs 13 apiece in Lucknow, making the zing of the citrus fruit off- limits to most people.

At least for now, many would forgo a squeeze on the salads and another on tandoori chicken.

According to IANS, lemon is being sold at Rs 325 per kilogram, making it hugely pricey.

Lemonade, popularly known as 'shikanji', is a popular drink many usually queue up for its zing during the scorching summer heat.

This time, those being scorched on the street will have to forget the pricey lemonade.

With the prices rocketing, people largely cut down consumption of lemon and road dhabas and takeaway eateries stopped serving them.

Prathmesh Shukla, who runs a popular 'chaat' stall in Hazratganj, regularly bought four kilograms of lemons.

After price soaring, Shukla stopped buying lemons for now.

Even those well-heeled who dine at the luxury restaurant also feel the pinch, after lemons are off the salad platters.

The food manager of a five-star hotel told IANS that they serve lemon slices only on demand unlike previously including it unasked.

Small restaurants and canteens have either hiked the prices of lemon drinks or taken them off the salad plates.

According to Girish Oberoi, President of the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Association, Small hotels have stopped serving lemon.

Oberoi blamed hike in fuel prices and low output behind the sudden escalation lemon prices.

He was clueless about when and how the prices of lemon would come down.
