Mumbai: Unlike most business leaders, OYO CEO Ritesh Agarwal got his hands dirty working alongside cleaning staff in the early days of his venture.

This might come as a surprise to many who believe that discussions in boardrooms will work on their own.

Things will not work, Agarwal knows only too well from his seat of the pants experience.

Agarwal recently shared his early experience of doubling up as a front desk manager and cleaning staff of his hospitality company, NDTV reported citing BizTalk.

A turning point in his life came at the age of 19 when he dropped out of college and was nevertheless found himself on the path to success.

Dropping out at that age made him eligible for the billionaire Peter Thiel’s Thiel Fellowship, which earned him a grant of $100,000.

He set out to do hospitality business starting OYO, which made all the difference in his and many others lives.

During the interview to BizTalk Agarwal shared a memorable incident of receiving a tip of Rs 20 from a happy customer for room service.

A customer berated Agarwal for delay in cleaning the room taking him for a room service staff.

The customer could not have been blamed because Agarwal was cleaning another room at the time.

Agarwal quickly engaged himself in cleaning the room spick-and-span which pleased the customer who gave him a tip of Rs 20.

‘The real stars of the hospitality industry are the front office managers, cleaning crew, receptionists and behind-the-scenes staff who ensure guests have the best possible experience during their stay. Early on I got to experience this first-hand when a customer tipped me ₹ 20,’ Agarwal recently wrote on Twitter.

In another interview previously Agarwal opened up about his early days of working as hotel staff, baby sitter, even the role of UNO with customers.
