Samsung India to launch new foldable smartphones in Aug

Seoul: Electronic devices major Samsung is all set to launch its premium foldable 5G devices Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 in India next month, in the subsequent week of the global launch scheduled for August 11.

"Every day, more people choose our foldables because they offer an experience people want that they can't get on any other device. Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are the latest devices that prove our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers through innovative technology," President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics TM Roh said.

Both devices, which are slimmer, lighter, and faster than the previous generation, come embedded with Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset, IPX8 certification, meaning these are water-resistant and will not be damaged even if submerged by up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes and can absorb external impact by folding the devices completely.

While Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream 36 colours, Galaxy Z Flip5 will come in Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender 34 finishes.

Fold 5 will be 2.4 millimeters slimmer and 10 grams lighter than Fold 4 and the Samsung S pen is also 41 percent slimmer compared to the previous generation devices. Fold 5 comes with a set of five cameras comprising a 10 MP selfie camera, 4 MP display camera, and triple rear camera, including 12 MP ultra-wide, 50 MP wide angle, and 10 MP telephoto camera. The external storage capacity in Fold 5 ranges from 256 GB to 1 TB across variants.

The Flip 5 model comes with 10 megapixels (MP) selfie camera, dual 12 MP dual rear camera, 8GB RAM, and up to 512 GB internal storage.

The pricing for the base variant of the Galaxy Z Flip5 starts at Rs 99,999 while the top model of the Galaxy Z Fold5 costs Rs 1,84,999.

According to the company, these phones will be manufactured in India at Samsung Noida factory, as part of their Powering Digital India initiative.

“We are confident that Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 will help us consolidate our smartphone leadership in the country,” said JB Park, President and CEO of Samsung SWA.

Pre-booking for Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 starts from July 27 across all leading online, offline retail stores and on Samsung Live at, the company announced.

According to market research and analysis firm Techarc, it is estimated that foldable handsets will contribute over 1.8 percent of the total smartphone revenues for 2023. The estimate suggests that over 6.35 lakh foldable smartphones will be sold in India during the year, which is less than 0.5 percent of the total sales volume estimated for this period.

The company also unveiled two models of Galaxy Watch 6, which have sleep monitoring, personalized heart rate zone, ECG features, and can provide predictions on the menstrual cycle, control camera of Flip 5, etc.

Both Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic will come with a 30 percent slimmer bezel and a 15 percent thinner rotating bezel.
