New Delhi: Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who is one of the co-owners of the Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Kerala Blasters Football Club, has sold his stakes in the franchise before the start of the new season.

The decision might come as a blow for the Blasters as Tendulkar had always been an integral part of the set-up and seen cheering the team from the stands in home and away games.


Dhaka: The Indian football team lost 1-2 to much-lower ranked Maldives in the final of the SAFF Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Saturday.

Maldives scored in either half, and the only Indian goal came in the added extra time of the second half courtesy a Sumeet Passi strike.

India, coached by Stephen Constantine, started on a positive note but a couple of counter attacks and a resilient defensive display from Maldives shattered the defending champions' dream of clinching their record eighth SAFF title.


Dhaka: Striker Manvir Singh scored twice as 10-man defending champions India got past arch-rivals Pakistan 3-1 to enter the final of the SAFF Cup at the Bangabandhu Stadium here on Wednesday.

After a goalless first-half, Manvir scored his first in the 49th minute only to double the score-line twenty minutes later.

Substitute Sumit Passi sealed the fate of the match in the 83rd minute.

For Pakistan, Hassan Bashir reduced the margin in the 88th minute.

Reykjavik: Romelu Lukaku scored two goals as World Cup semi-finalists Belgium began their Nations League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Iceland on Tuesday.

Eden Hazard converted a 29th-minute penalty after a foul on Lukaku, with the Manchester United striker netting a quick-fire second before adding a third in the closing stages.

Lukaku, also on the mark in Friday's 4-0 friendly defeat of Scotland, was brought down by a clumsy tackle from Sverrir Ingason and Hazard rolled the resulting spot-kick to the left of Hannes Halldorsson.

Stockholm: Turkey mounted an amazing comeback here to defeat Sweden 3-2 in the UEFA Nations League opener for to the hosts.

The Turks, who made their tournament debut last Friday with a 1-2 loss to Russia, created more chances in the first half at the Friends Arena here on Monday and it came as somewhat of a surprise when Isaac Kiese-Thelin scored minutes before the break to put Sweden ahead 1-0.


Madrid: The Spanish football players' union (AFE) on Monday maintained its position against holding a La Liga match between Barcelona and Girona in the United States in January next year.

AFE president David Aganzo made the announcement after a meeting with La Liga chairman Javier Tebas to discuss the matter, and they are expected to meet again next week, reports EFE news agency.


Dhaka: The Indian football team defeated the Maldives 2-0 to book a semi-final clash with arch rivals Pakistan in the SAFF Cup here on Sunday.

The semi-final which will be the first official meeting of the two teams after a gap of five years will be played at Dhaka's Bangabandhu Stadium on Wednesday.

The last time the two teams had met in an official match was also in a SAFF Championship in Kathmandu in September 2013. India had won 1-0 on that occasion.

New Jersey: Brazil went up against the United States in a FIFA friendly tie and won 2-0 as both teams began their preparations for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

Brazil maintained its strong tradition with an easy win on Friday, thanks to the goals by forwards Roberto Firmino at the 11th minute and Neymar converting a penalty at the 43rd.

Brazil's midfielder Douglas Costa came in from the right to make a cross at Firmino in a perfect center allowing the latter to send the ball past US goalkeeper Zack Steffen, reports Efe news.

Faro: Portugal and Croatia drew 1-1 in a friendly match that the hosts faced without captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite the absence of the superstar striker, more than 26,000 people turned out for the contest at Algarve stadium in Faro on Thursday.

The Portuguese made the brighter start, but the first goal belonged to the 2018 World Cup runners-up, who took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a strike by Ivan Perisic, reports Efe news.
