Periya (Kasargode): Police have arrested CPM's Local Committee member, A Peethambaran in connection with the murders of two Youth Congress workers, Sarath Lal and Kripesh, in Kasaragod on February 17.
Police informed that the special investigation team arrested Peethambaran after he was identified as the mastermind behind the twin murder and is to be charged as responsible for the conspiracy too.
Following the arrest, CPM Kasaragod district committee expelled Peethambaran from the party. Earlier, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had stated that anybody having any links with such murders will not have a place in the party.
According to Kasaragod district police chief A Srinivas, the arrest of the CPM leader was recorded in the evening on Tuesday, after he was found to have conspired the killings of the two young men, based on evidence. The accused will be produced before Hosdurg magistrate court on Wednesday.
Six others including CPM workers Muraleedharan, Valsaraj, Hari and Saji George were also arrested.
A car bearing plate no: KL-14-J-5683 said to have been used for the crime, was found abandoned near the bushes in Pallikkara Pakkam.
Peethambaran was arrested with others by the DySPs in the special investigation team, M Pradeep Kumar, TP Ranjith and Jaison K Abraham, in the early hours of Tuesday from a party stronghold in Pallaikkare.
Meanwhile, investigators are said to have confirmed through interrogation that Peethambaran had a direct role in the murder, planned as an act of revenge. The slain Congress workers were part of a gang that attacked the accused and a case was registered against them charging attempt to murder. While Sarath was arrested, Kripesh was let off by the police, as he was not proved to be present at the scene.
Peethambaran apparently ventured for the lethal act as he could not suffer the insult, and so proceeded with the help of the co-accused. He felt that his party did not give due attention to the case, or authorize any retaliation as he had expected. But the local leader wanted to avenge the attack and this led to the murder, according to police sources.
