Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant announcement, Congress-led UDF government Friday raised the retirement age of government employees, joining the service from April this year, to 60.

The retirement age of existing staff is 56.

The budget presented by Finance Minister K M Mani proposes enhancing social security pensions and offers sops for farmers.

Though the declaration of the raising of retirement age was there in the budget, Mani missed it out while reading the proposals out in the House. Mani later declared it in a press conference.
