Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government Wednesday announced floating a new company to provide potable water in the state.
"The new company will source water from clean places and it would be purified before being distributed," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said in a statement.
The Kerala Drinking Water Supply Co will provide clean drinking water through tankers.
The chief minister said the company has been formed on the lines of the country's first private-public funded airport at Kochi and the initiative should not be seen as an attempt to privatise the potable water sector.
"The Kerala Water Authority will have 23 percent stakes in the company and the rest of the shares will be given to local bodies, residents' associations, companies and individuals," the state said.
"The company will be headed by the state water resources minister. The board of directors of the new company will have top secretaries from various government departments and representatives of other stake holders," Chandy said.
