Mother demanding justice for dead daughter beaten; 3 cops suspended

Aligarh: Three policemen in Uttar Pradesh, including a Circle Officer, have been suspended after they were caught on camera manhandling a distraught woman in Aligarh whose six-year-old daughter had been found dead yesterday morning in a garbage dump.

The woman alleged that her daughter was raped before being murdered.

The group of policemen was seen thrashing the woman in the pink salwar kameez and a man near her. One cop even dragged the woman along the ground. He has been transferred.

And equally insensitive were remarks made by Aligarh's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Mishra. "How can you decide this or how can we decide this? Did the girl's relatives see her being raped? What I mean to say is, everything will be proved on medical grounds. But before that how can we say anything on this matter?"

Medical tests later confirmed the girl was sexually assaulted.

A few hours after the child's body was found, nearly a hundred protesters gathered in the neighbourhood shouting slogans against the police. Officers used batons on the crowd, and attacked the girl's parents.

Deputy Inspector General of Aligarh Division, D Prakash, acknowledged that "unnecessary force was used on protesters".

"I don't understand. When a woman goes to the police station and complains that her six-year-old daughter's body has been found with injuries all over, then instead of sympathising with her, the police started to hit her and dragged her around," said CPM leader Subhashini Ali.

The police have said an enquiry will be completed in three days.
