Islamabad: A special government prosecutor in the Benazir Bhutto murder case has been gunned down, according to local media in Pakistan.

According to the police, unknown gunmen opened fire on Zulfiqar Ali’s car in Islamabad’s G-9 area leaving him severely injured. He was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Pakistan's Dawn newpaper reported that Zulfiqar Ali was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His remains were later brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Islamabad, the newspaper said.

Zulfiqar Ali was scheduled to appear in an anti-terrorism court on Friday concerning the murder of of former prime minister Bhutto in 2007, according to Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, who reported from Islamabad.

Hyder said Zulfiqar Ali's murder shows "that the security apparatus is not working."

"This is a man who should have been provided maximum security," our correspondent said. "There will be question marks as to how just one guard was riding with him."

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
