Corporate agenda behind high-speed corridor, says Prashant Bhushan

Kozhikode: The proposed High-Speed Rail Corridor in the State is meant to benefit the private corporations, civil rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan has said.

He was inaugurating a protest organised by the High-Speed Rail Pradhirotha Samithi in front of the collectorate here on Thursday.

The multi-crore project may not be economically feasible for the State and political parties should come forward for an open discussion with the public, he said.

He said Rs 1.18 trillion earmarked for the ambitious rail project was much larger than the allocation made for the State budget for the fiscal 2013-14.

Claiming that no study was conducted on environmental hazard, he said more than 50,000 houses would be razed along the route, if the project was implemented.

Saying that all the development projects in the country were being conceived eyeing graft, he alleged the government had not given adequate compensation to evacuees so far.
