Mumbai: A Mumbai court on Tuesday granted bail to CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan, actor Vindoo Randhawa and six others on a bond of 25,000 rupees each in the T20 betting case.
Meiyappan and Vindoo were in judicial custody till June 14. Bail was granted as two bookies had got bail in the same case. Three more bookies were also granted bail in the case.
According to reports, Meiyappan, Vindoo Singh and others cannot leave the country while out on bail.
Meiyappan was arrested on the night of May 25 for his alleged involvement in the T20 League betting scandal.
He was in the eye of a storm after actor and TV reality show winner Vindoo, arrested on May 22 for his alleged links with bookies, admitted to having placed bets on his behalf.
Meiyappan and Vindoo had filed bail pleas soon after the metropolitan magistrate remanded them in judicial custody. Urging the court on Monday to grant them bail, the duo's lawyers argued that their custodial interrogation was not required.
Meiyappan's lawyer Aabad Ponda argued that the CSK team honcho was not involved in match-fixing or spot-fixing.
"The one case is that of placing bets with Vindoo. Placing bets is a bailable offence. All the sections levelled against him are bailable except three - 420, 466 and 468 of the IPC. It is not the case that Meiyappan forged documents hence 466 and 468 are not applicable," he had argued.
