Monsoon trawl ban begins on Friday

Kozhikode: The trawling ban, the annual exercise aimed at conserving marine resources, will come into effect in the State from Friday midnight and will be in force till July 30.

Monsoon being the spawning season for a large variety of fish, particularly shrimp, the annual trawling restriction was first introduced in Kerala in 1988 as a conservation measure. Since then it has been a routine annual affair.

An expert committee appointed by the State government to study the impact of the ban recently recommended that it be extended to 75 days, a move fishing trade unions are resisting.

The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala June 5, according to officials.

During the ban period, authorities ensure that neither trawlers nor mechanised boats fish in the area demarcated by the government.
