HC rejects Achuthanandan’s plea in Palmolein case

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by Leader of the Opposition V.S Achuthanandan challenging a vigilance court order giving clean chit to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was a member of K Karunakaran Cabinet in 1991-92 when the Palmolein case rocked the State.

In his petition, Achuthanandan said the court had accepted the Vigilance report saying that no evidence was forthcoming in relation to the involvement of the then Finance Minister Oommen Chandy, without considering his objections raised by him to the report.

The special judge had not addressed any of the legal issues involved in the case, he stated.

The case related to irregularities in the import of 15,000 tonnes of palmolein from Malaysia during 1991-92, which allegedly caused a loss of Rs.2.32 crore to the exchequer. K. Karunakaran was the first accused in the case. Chandy was the 23rd witness in the case.
