Kozhikode: Reacting to the frontal attack of KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala on Muslim League on Saturday, the party leadership Sunday said that both the Congress and Muslim League had the responsibility to keep the UDF alliance intact.

“It is not the responsibility of Muslim League alone. All the parties in the UDF have equal responsibility in keeping the Front united,” party leader E.T Muhammad Basheer told reporters after an urgent leadership meeting in Malappuram on Sunday.

“We will discuss the issue further in the state secretariat meet to be held on July 4. A formal decision on the matter will be announced after that,” added Basheer.

Chennithala launched a frontal attack on Muslim League on Saturday, hinting that the alliance with the League has become a “liability” for Congress. Inaugurating the 50th death anniversary of former KPCC president C K Govindan Nair at the DCC office here, Chennithala said: “CKG had the farsightedness to say that if we (Congress) concede their (IUML) unreasonable demands, it would become a big liability for Congress. This is a lesson for us”. CKG had warned that if we concede two or three seats to IUML, they would ask more and this had become a reality, Chennithala said.

However, shortly after the function, Chennithala issued a statement saying he was merely quoting the words of C.K. Govindan Nair and did not mean this as a criticism against the IUML, an integral part of the UDF government.
