Egypt’s Morsy hits back at military ultimatum

Cairo: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy criticised an ultimatum issued by the country’s military for the government to resolve the current political unrest, news reports said Tuesday.

Mr. Morsy’s office said the President was not consulted before the military issued the ultimatum, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram.

Mr. Morsy will continue with his national reconciliation plan, his office reportedly said.

The military said Monday it would announce measures to end the political stalemate within 48 hours, after clashes between government supporters and opponents turned deadly.

The statement was hailed by demonstrators in Cairo’s Tahrir Square demanding Mr. Morsy’s ouster.

An army spokesman denied criticism from Mr. Morsy’s supporters that the statement amounted to a military coup, saying it was aimed at pushing all political factions to reach consensus.
