Kozhikode: Stating that there are serious hurdles in the ruling UDF going forward, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) secretary E T Muhammed Basheer on Thursday said the Congress high command should intervene to solve all the issues in the UDF.

Talking to reporters after IUML Secretariat meeting, E T Muhammed Basheer said a permanent solution should be arrived at to solve all the problems in the UDF and also inside each constituent partners.

"There are serious hurdles in the ruling United Democratic Front going forward. All issues should be settled for its smooth functioning of the Front. The good work done by the government was not reaching the people due to various hurdles in UDF," Basheer said.

"IUML is aware that the high command and congress state leadership have realised the situation. More discussions are needed and IUML's stand will depend on the outcome of such discussions," he said.

Expressing concern at the frequent criticism against IUML from within UDF, he said there should be a stop to unwanted criticism against IUML and giving a communal colour to the party functioning.

Strains have surfaced in the long-standing relations between Congress and IUML, two key partners of ruling UDF in Kerala, following certain comments by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala against the League at a recent meeting at Kozhikode.

Miffed by his speech and a couple of other Congress leaders at a meeting in Kozhikode, top IUML leaders held an emergency meet at party supremo Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal's residence in Malappuram and came out with a statement that maintaining unity in UDF was the responsibility of all partners and not that of the League alone.
