Justify allocation of 164 coal blocks: SC to Centre

New Delhi: Supreme Court on Wednesday has asked Centre to file records of all 36 screening committee meetings for coal blocks allocation.

The CBI is struggling with a probe in absence of documents on decisions taken by screening committees on coal blocks allocation, the court said.

"There is lot of deficiency/infirmity in decisions taken by screening committees," the apex court observed after perusing the CBI’s fresh status report on Wednesday.

The court then asked the Centre to file appropriate a counter affidavit with all supporting documents in four weeks justifying the allocation of 164 coal blocks.

"We are concerned urgently with non-partisan investigation by CBI," the court said adding, it wanted to know from the Attorney-General why government sanction is needed in a court-monitored probe.

Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor-General Siddharth Luthra has withdrawn as CBI counsel in this case.
