Palakkad: One more infant has died of alleged malnutrition in Attappady here, taking the toll of such deaths to 53.

One-month-old child of Murukan-Girija of Palur hamlet, who was admitted to the Thrissur Medical Collage, died on Friday.

Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh and Chief Minister oommen Chandy had earlier visited Attapady to have an on the spot study of the health scenario in the wake of infant deaths due to malnutrition in the recent days.

Taking a serious view of the situation, the Central government had announced a five-point special package and set up a Special Task Force headed by S.M. Vijayanand, Additional Secretary of the Union Ministry of Rural Development to implement it within a period of 18 months.

After visiting the area, Ramesh asked the state government officials accompanying them to start an anti-liquor campaign immediately.
The State government also had announced a package to improve the health delivery system in the area.
