Kattappana: The condition of the five-year-old child, who was brutally tortured by his father and stepmother, has improved a bit. However, the child is still in critical stage, said a medical bulleting released on Thursday.
The doctors at St John's Hospital at Kattappana in Idukki district said the child was still on the ventilator support.
The child had suffered serious head injury, a broken leg and had wounds all over the body.
The police arrested the boy's father Sherif and stepmother Aneesha were arrested on Wednesday. They were produced before a court in Peermedu in Idukki which remanded them in 14 days judicial custody. The duo has been charged of attempted murder.
The couple, who brought the child to the hospital a few days ago in a serious condition, had initially said the injuries were the result of a fall suffered by the child while taking a bath. But doctors, who examined the child, immediately ruled that out and informed the police of the incident.
Apart from being brutally beaten up causing deep injuries on the head and chin, the child's body was found to have been scoured by nails.
Taking a serious note of the incident, the government formed an official panel to draw up guidelines to ensure children's safety and said, if necessary, a separate law to check recurrence of such crimes would be made.
Mother visits child
Meanwhile, the boy's mother visited him at the hospital. After visiting him, she told reporters that she never abandoned her son.
