Chennai: Top-notch music director V Dakshinamurthy, who composed music for hundreds of film songs in Malayalam and other southern languages over the last seven decades, died here Friday, industry sources said.
He was 94 and was keeping indifferent health for some time. He breathed his last at his residence in Mylapore.
Endearingly called as "Swamy" by the film fraternity and his fans, Dakshinamurthy's songs stood out on account of their classical touch.
Dakshinamoorthy composed music for over 125 films and was a major presence, especially in Malayalm films. He has to his credit as many as 859 songs composed over a period of 50 years.
His evergreen compositions include Swapnangal... Swapnangale ningal...(Kavyamela), Pattu padiyurakkan njan...(Seetha), Uthara swayamvaram...(Danger Biscuit), Kattile pazhmulam...(Vilaykku Vangiya Veena) and Vathil pazhuthilooden...(Idanazhiyil Oru Kalocha).
The singers who rendered songs for him include K J Yesudas, P Suseela, Jayachandran and P Leela.
