Egyptian journalist shot dead

Cairo: An Egyptian journalist working for state newspaper Al-Ahram was shot dead by security forces and another was injured late Monday at a military checkpoint in the Nile Delta region, the paper reported.

Local bureau chief Tamer Abdel-Raouf was returning home from a meeting with the governor of Beheira province, a few hours after the beginning of a curfew at 7 pm (1700 GMT), Al-Ahram said. Journalists are officially exempt from the curfew.

Another journalist travelling with Abdel-Raouf, Hamed El-Barbary from the newspaper Al-Gomhuriya, was injured in the incident, said the report.

Security sources in Egypt were quoted as saying the journalists’ car did not heed warnings to stop.
