Palakkad: The Coca-Cola Virudha Samara Samiti (Anti Coca-Cola Struggle Committee) has said it will end the stir if the Tribunal Bill on compensation gets the Presidential accord.

The Samiti has also decided to intensify stir until getting the Presidential assent to the Plachimada Coca Cola Victims Relief and Compensation Claims Special Tribunal Bill, 2011.

The bill was passed unanimously by the State Assembly on February 24, 2011. Though the State government had sent the Bill for the President’s approval through the Home Ministry, it has been delayed without getting the assent even after two years.

As part of its stir against delay in getting Presidential assent, the Samiti had conducted ‘Janadikara Sabha’ on August 15. It will also organize a ‘Janadikara Yathra’ beginning from Kasargod to Thiruvananthapuram, from October 15 to November 15. Following it, a protest march will be held to the residents of Cabinet Ministers in Delhi.

A high level committee appointed by the State government to report the loss caused to the people had estimated an amount of Rs.216.25 crore as compensation due from the firm.

The villagers of the Plachimada have been protesting against the Coca-Cola Plant for the last 13 years demanding compensation. Coca-Cola closed down its unit at Plachimada in March 2004, following agitation by local people complaining of environment pollution and over exploitation of ground water by the company.
