Moscow: Russia is sending two warships to the eastern Mediterranean, the country’s general staff said on Thursday.

An anti-submarine frigate from the Russian Northern Fleet would arrive in the region in the coming days, an unnamed source in the general staff told the Interfax news agency. It would be joined by the cruiser Moskva, currently in the North Atlantic.

“The well-known situation in the eastern Mediterranean makes it necessary that we adjust our forces,” the source said.

Another cruiser, the Varyag, was due to arrive in the region in autumn to replace the destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, which is currently based in the Mediterranean, the report said.
