Idukki dam likely to be opened

Thodupuzha: The Idukki district administration is likely to open the Idikki dam as the water level in the dam is short by just 2 ft to reach the full reservoir level of 2,403 ft.

The administration is awaiting the Kerala State Electricity Board’s decision in this regard.

A group of officials including K.K. Karuppankutty, Chief Engineer, Dam Safety, KSEB, will visit the dam today to oversee the steps for opening the dam.

The KSEB control room is monitoring the situation every hour and giving inputs to various departments on the latest position. If the water level continues to rise at the same rate, the dam will be opened on Sunday.

The area continued to get heavy rainfall on Saturday. The catchment area had received 68 cm rainfall on Friday.

A public warning has been issued in Idukki and Ernakulum districts in the wake of rising water level. The district administration has also prepared a plan for providing temporary rehabilitation to those who may get affected.
