Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the attack and said that twelve people had been killed in the shootout.
Abdullah said reports have been received that "12 people have been killed".
"...I would speculate that this infiltration probably took place between 12-24 hours," he said.
He added: "Encounter is on at army camp."
The attack came a day after the Prime Minister left for the US where he is scheduled to meet Sharif on Sunday for talks which have been opposed by BJP.
