Jodhpur: The Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail application of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu in a sexual assault case of a minor girl.
During the proceedings, the prosecution lawyer claimed that Asaram is a paedophile (a person who is sexually attracted to children).
Asaram, 72, had filed a bail application before the Jodhpur bench of the high court on September 13. He is lodged in the Jodhpur Central Jail since September 02.
A District and Sessions court here had earlier extended the judicial custody of Bapu and his attendant Shiva till 11 October in the case.
The District and Sessions judge also extended the police custody of another key accused, Shilpi, by three more days. All the three accused were produced before the District and Sessions judge as Asaram followers shouted slogans, protesting their arrests.
A 16-year-old girl on August 20 lodged a police complaint, accusing Asaram of sexually assaulting her at his ashram near Jodhpur.
Asaram was arrested in the case on 1 September and his aide Shiva was arrested a few days later. Shilpi, who is accused of making arrangements to send the 16-year-old girl to Manai ‘ashram’ where Asaram allegedly sexually assaulted her in August, surrendered before the court last week.
