Kochi: Customs officials, accused in the gold smuggling case in Cochin airport, reportedly got lakhs of rupees as bribe for facilitating uninterrupted ‘passage’ of gold through ‘green channel’ at the airport.
Faiz, who is one of the key accused in the case, reportedly told the CBI sleuths that the officials were paid Rs one lakh for facilitating smuggling of each 4kg of gold.
The amount was handed over as hard cash.
Faiz revealed this during the interrogation by the sleuths along with the arrested Customs Deputy Commissioner C. Madhavan and Customs Preventive Officers Sunil Kumar.
He, however, duped the Customs officials of the quantity of gold that were being smuggled to reduce the amount to be paid to them. Faiz told the officials that he carried only 4kg of gold while he actually smuggled 20kg.
