New Delhi: The NAI has called off its decision to visit Italy to question four Italian marines, who were witness to the killing of two fishermen off Kerala coast in 2012, after their refusal to come to India for deposition before investigators.
The decision is reportedly following opposition from the Home Ministry. Legal advice from the Law Ministry and the attorney general was also against the visit.
According to reports, the NIA, instead of sending the officials to Italy, will seek help from Italian court to question the witnesses.
Notwithstanding New Delhi's consistent request to send the witnesses, Rome had made it clear that the four will not come to India to appear before investigators in connection with the case in which two Italian marines are accused.
After Italy's refusal, there were reports that the NIA might send its officials to Italy.
