Oommen Chandy discharged from hospital

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was kept under observation in hospital for injuries sustained during stone pelting by suspected LDF workers in Kannur, was Tuesday discharged.

Emerging from the Medical College Hospital, Chandy thanked workers of the Congress and its UDF allies across the state for conducting their protests over the incident in a peaceful manner.

"First of all, let me thank the UDF workers for conducting the protests over the incident in a peaceful manner. Violence has no role in a democracy where everyone has the right to protest peacefully," he told reporters.

Chandy sustained injuries on his forehead during the stone pelting on Sunday. He was also hit on the chest by a stone causing inflammation in the area.

Doctors said the condition of Chandy was stable but he needed to rest for two days at home.

Police in Kannur booked 17 CPI-M activists yesterday and charged them with attempt to murder. Also, cases have been registered against several LDF functionaries and workers including two CPI-M MLAs from Kannur district.

The CPI-M leaders, however, maintain that the party had nothing to do with the incident as physically targeting Chief Minister was not part of its ongoing campaign demanding his resignation over the solar panel scam.
