Thiruvananthapuram: Four accused, including T.K Fayaz, in the Nedumbassery gold smuggling case were booked under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA).

Three customs officials, including a deputy customs commissioner, are accused in the case. While the Deputy Commissioner, C. Madhavan, is the first accused in the case, two preventive officers - Sunil Kumar and Sanjay Kumar Soni – are second and third accused respectively

The Kerala High Court Friday had rejected the bail plea of T.K Fayaz, prime accused in smuggling of 20 kg of gold bars from Sharjah to Kochi through Nedumbassery airport.

Though the Ernakulam Principal and Sessions Court on November 4 granted bail to Fayaz, he remained in judicial custody after the CBI Special Court denied him bail in another case, being probed by the CBI over Customs officials.

Fayaz was arrested on Sept 22 from the Delhi airport on the charge of smuggling of 20 kg of gold bars and was slapped two cases. He was granted bail in one of the cases.

Two purdah-clad women had tried to smuggle in the gold bars. The two along with the husband of one of them were arrested as they were about to leave the airport here. The investigation and their questioning had led the police to Fayaz.
