Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Whip P.C George has sought a probe against former Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem in the wake of reports that his relative had received bribes to grant permission for mining licence at Chakkittapara in Kozhikode.

“The CPI-M should be ready to conduct a probe against Elamaram Kareem after releasing him from all party posts in the wake of the party plenum being held in Palakkad,” George told reporters here on Wednesday.

“Allegation of Rs.5 crores have now been leveled against Kareem. A claim of Rs.3 crores will soon be revealed,” he said.

A new controversy Tuesday erupted after reports that former Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem’s relative had received bribes to grant permission for mining licence at Chakkittapara in Kozhikode.

Subair, driver of TP Noushad, a close aide and relative of Kareem, Tuesday had told reporters that Noushad had received bribes to grant permission for mining at Chakkittapara and that he was a witness of it.

Meanwhile, CPI-M State secretariat member Elamaram Kareem Tuesday had denied the allegations saying that he had nothing to do with the permission given for iron ore prospecting in 740 hectares of eco-sensitive forest land at Chakkittappara.

The State Industries Department Monday had cancelled the mining licence given to the Karnataka-based MSPL company at Chakkittapara.
