Kozhikode: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala Saturday said the government should order an impartial probe into alleged irregularities in granting licence by the previous LDF government to a private firm to mine ironore from Chakkitapara, forming part of Western Ghats and demarcated as ecologically sensitive in the Kasturirangan report.

"Government should take a final decision on the issue today itself. People want an impartial enquiry to bring all facts connected with the mining issue before them," Ramesh Chennithala said.

"There should not be any more delay in ordering a probe," he said, adding several leaders have already demanded a CBI probe into the issue.

Chennithala was speaking to reporters after visiting Chakkitapara along with other Congress leaders, including T N Pratapan, MLA.

The KPCC leader had recently submitted a letter to Chief minister Oommen Chandy urging an immeidate enquiry.

The proposed mining site at Chakkitapara has been demarcated as ecologically sensitive area in the Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats.

The clearance was given in 2009. The issue came into the limelight recently when a team of officials from the company reached the site to conduct a survey prior to mining.
