Kasargod: A murder case accused was attacked at the District Court premises by some assailants here on Monday.
Mawgli Rafeeq, an accused in the Muthalib murder case, was attacked with knives by suspected rival-gang members while he was being produced before the court. He has been admitted in a private hospital in Mangalore.
The police suspect Muthalib’s gang members behind the attack.
Rafeeq, along with his associates Kaliya Rafeeq and Shamsu, was arrested last month in connection with a case related to the murder of Muthalib, a resident of Uppala here.
The police picked up Mawgli Rafeeq and Shamsu in connection with the case from Karnataka. Based on information from them, the probing team later arrested Kaliya Rafeeq from Mumbai. He has been named first accused in the case.
Muthalib, who was an accused in several cases, was hacked to death in a late-night attack by the gang of Kaliya Rafeeq while he was leaving his flat in a car on 25 October.
The police said that Muthalib was earlier a member of Rafeeq’s gang. The two parted ways following the arrest of Rafeeq in a drug case. Rafeeq suspected Muthlib being behind the arrest and hatched a plan, in an act of revenge, to murder him.
