New Delhi: Devyani Khobragade, who was arrested in New York for alleged visa fraud and underpaying her domestic assistant and had to reportedly undergo humiliating frisking by US marshals last week, has been shifted to the Permanent Mission of India (PMI) in New York, it is reliably learnt here Wednesday.

She is now entitled to all diplomatic privileges and immunity under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which she did not enjoy as a consular officer.

Devyani will have to apply for UN accreditation which in turn will need US State Department's approval. Now she will get full diplomatic immunity, not the limited one as a consular official. India is hopeful that Washington will issue the card and, in doing so, extend full immunity to her, TV reports said.

Consular officers are covered under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which does not give them the same protection as full diplomats.
