Kochi: Andi Vijayan, who was imprisoned in the West African nation of Togo on a charge that he aided pirates during an attack, arrived in Kochi on Friday to an emotional welcome from his family and friends.

Vijayan, 47, a third engineer with Marshall Islands-flagged MT Ocean Centurion is a native of Palakkad.

Vijayan had tears of joy when he returned to the embrace of his dear ones after almost a five-month ordeal.

He said that the Prime Minister’s Office and India’s High Commissioner in Ghana helped their release. He, however, said no support was extended by the Kerala government or union ministers from the state, though his family made formal requests for help.

Vijayan said that his family had petitioned the Chief Minister and Union Ministers from the State. But they did not even bother to reply, he said. Vijayan believes he would have been able to walk free much earlier had someone intervened.
