Thiruvananthapuram: The expert panel, set up by the government to formulate the State’s response to the report of the Kasturirangan committee on the conservation of the Western Ghats, has recommended for the withdrawal of the Kerala Forest (Vesting and Management of Ecologically Fragile Lands) Act, 2003.

The three member panel headed by Dr Oommen V Oommen, in its report submitted to the Chief Minister, has also asked to conduct a Vigilance enquiry into the illegal quarries in the State.

Under pressure to implement the recommendations of the Madhav Gadgil and Kasturirangan panels on Western Ghats preservation, the State government formed an experts’ committee to prepare the State’s response on the issue sought by the Centre.

The panel, headed by Oommen V. Oommen, had V.N. Rajashekharan Pillai, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and P C Cyriac, former chairman, Rubber Board as members.

The panel had received the grievances and proposals submitted by people’s representatives, farmer organisations, and eco groups.
