Kerala not to file affidavit in SC favouring Aadhaar

Thiruvananthapuram: Facing severe criticism, the State government Monday decided not to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court supporting the implementation of Aadhar for availing various subsidy benefits till people's apprehensions on the issue were resolved.

The government decision came in the wake of reports that the move to file the affidavit in the Supreme Court favouring the Aadhar was without holding discussions in the State Cabinet.

Madhyamam Daily has reported today that the IT Department took the decision on filing affidavit in the Supreme Court without having much discussion in the Cabinet. The report has also said that the Civil Supplies Department, which is responsible to distribute the cooking gas (LPG) in the State, was not aware of the IT Department’s decision.

Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty said the Advocate General had been instructed not to submit the affidavit now.

He pointed out that reports appearing in media in this regard was based on affidavit prepared by officials and it had not been discussed in the cabinet.

A decision would be taken only after the matter was taken up the in the cabinet, he said, adding that if necessary, it would seek more time to file the affidavit in the Apex Court.

The State's decision was in response to Apex Court's interim order directing states to explain their stand in this regard.
