Chennai: The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, has extended its stay on the construction of the Aranmula airport project till January 31.
The Chennai bench of the Green Tribunal extended the stay after pointing out the matter on the petitioners’ argument that permission for the construction was given by various government agencies without conducting a proper environmental study.
The Tribunal has also sought explanation from the Union and State governments and KGS group on the matter.
On an appeal filed by a resident of the area against the environment clearance (EC) granted to the project, the National Green Tribunal on December 20 stopped works at the country’s first ever ‘green field airport’ by KGS Aranmula Airport Ltd. at Aranmula.
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had issued an order on November 18 granting the EC to KGS Aranmula Airport Ltd.
