Insurance Scheme for state police personnel

Thiruvananthapuram: The State government on Thursday unveiled a comprehensive medical insurance scheme for the 56,000 police force, at an annual outlay of Rs 20 crore, with no liability on the part of those insured.

Making a statement under Rule 300 in the Assembly, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said the cabinet meeting yesterday approved the scheme, which was worked out with United India Insurance Company.

"When this scheme is introduced, it will help nearly 56,000 police personnel and their families," he said.

The significant feature of the scheme is it provides for financial aid for treatment of injuries suffered in accidents, police action or any encounter with a violent mob with a buffer limit of Rs one crore for the entire police force over and above the family floater amount of Rs two lakh, he said.

It was estimated that government would incur an annual expenditure of Rs 20 crore on this account.

Those insured need not pay any insurance amount under the scheme, he added.
