Kannur: Prominent Muslim scholar Sayd Abdur-rahman Kunjikkoya Thangal aka Ullal Thangal (95) has passed away.

Known as the Crown Among the Clerics ("Taj-ul Ulama"), Ullal Thangal breathed his last at his residence at Ettikulam in Payyannur here around 3.40 pm on Saturday.

Thangal, a native of Chaliyam in Kozhikode district, was the President of Samastha Kerala Sunni Jam'iyyathul Ulama (Kanthapuram faction), an organization of scholars and clerics under the Kanthapuram faction of Sunnis.

He had been serving as the principle of Ullal Sayd Madani College.

He was a prominent member of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama before the split of the Sunnis in 1989.
