Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday filed charge sheets in seven lottery scam cases in the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
Santiago Martin is the first accused in the chargesheet and there are seven accused in the case including a close aide of Martin, Johny Kennedy.
The charge sheets alleged that in a dubious deal struck between officials of the Sikkim Lottery Department and the accused, the Sikkim government had lost more than Rs.4,500 crore. The CBI, however, said that no loss had been caused to exchequer of the Kerala government.
The accused had been charged under 120B (conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC and Sections 4(d) and 4(f) of the Lottery Regulation Act. According to the CBI, money from winning tickets was given to 72 persons, some of them government officials, with assistance of 15 middlemen after taking commission.
