Nilambur murder: Police approach invites criticism

Malappuram: The police team probing the murder of a woman, Radha, who was a sweeper at the Congress party office at Nilambur, have invited criticism for their ‘slipshod’ approach in the investigation with the latest being recording the statements of the victim’s kin in public.

The police team led by Nilambur CI A P Chandran on Wednesday recorded the statements’ of some of the relatives of Radha in public.

The relatives, who accused the officer of careless approach, also alleged that the police came with some of the local Congress leaders to record the statement.

There were earlier reports that the CI was trying to save the accused as he had earlier made a statement that the victim was not raped.

CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had on Tuesday alleged that the way in which the police was proceeding with the investigation into the murder case was suspicious. He added that was, seemingly, the result of a high-level consultation following the involvement of some bigwigs in the case.

He said that there was a certain element of mystery in the reports released by the police in the case.

“Since a personal staff member of (minister) Aryadan Muhammed has been involved in the case, the investigation should be carried out with at most importance. Moreover, the murder reportedly took place in one of the offices of the Congress party, and the involvement of some prominent persons is suspected. The state government and the newly-elected chief of the KPCC should give due importance to the matter,” he said.

Police had arrested Biju Nair, a personal staff member of state Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed, and his friend Shamsudin for murdering Radha.

The duo confessed to committing the crime, but denied the reports that the murder was committed during an attempt to outrage the modesty of the victim.

Following interrogation, the accused also admitted that they have tried to kill Radha three times before.
