Kalpetta: CPI-M State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said the government should seriously look at the allegations made by a former disciple of Mata Amritanandamayi against her and the functioning of the Ashram.

“The allegations should be viewed seriously as the person who made the revelations had stayed in the Ashram for years,” Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters at a reception accorded to the Kerala Raksha Yathra here.

“The government is responsible to look into what is happening at the Amritanandamayi Ashram. There should also be a probe into the income source of the Ashram,” the CPI-M leader said.

A book written by Gail Tredwell, a former disciple of Mata Amritanandamayi, has raised some serious allegations against the ‘Hugging Saint’ and functioning of her Ashram.

In the book, Tredwell recounts her personal experience in the ashram, where she admits she was complicit in covering up all sorts of ashram secrets, in a misguided attempt to protect the guru’s misdeeds from public view (believing, as all guru cultists do, that the guru is God in human form and therefore exempt from human standards of right and wrong).
