Thiruvananthapuram: Reiterating his demand for a CBI probe into the mysterious death of Satnam Singh, Opposition leader V.S Achuthanandan has said he cannot agree with the Central government’s decision not to hand over the case to the CBI.

“An impartial probe is required to unravel the conspiracy in the case,” Mr. Achuthanandan has said in a statement.

The CPI-M stalwart, in a letter to the Chief Minister, had expressed his dissatisfaction in the probe conducted by the Crime Branch of the State police and sought a CBI probe in the case.

The relatives of Satnam Singh had also met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to press for a CBI probe into the circumstances of death of Satnam Singh.

Twenty three -year-old Satnam, who was a student of the Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow, died in August, 2012 at the mental health centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

Satnam had been arrested from the Ashram of Matha Amrithanandamayi, when the Ashram security mistook him for a militant. As he broke line and advanced to the Mata while she was giving darshan, they suspected it to be an attempt to attack her, immobilized him and handed him over to the Karunagappally police.

Later, Satnam was shifted to the mental health centre in Thiruvananthapuram and was found dead in his cell. He was suspected to have been thrashed either by the police, or by the staff or the inmates of the mental health centre.
