New Delhi: Despite the State government’s pressure on the Centre to issue the draft notification on the Kasturirangan report at the earliest, the efforts have not yet yielded the results as the Union Environment Ministry is now waiting for the Election Commission’s clearance on it.
The draft notification was forwarded to the Election Commission by the MoEF for clearance on Friday.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala Thursday had gone on a troubleshooting mission to Delhi to expedite the issuance of the draft notification. Belying Mr. Chennithala’s promise, the draft notification on the Kasturirangan report could not be issued on Friday.
The MoEF on Tuesday had issued an Office Memorandum on the Kasturiranagan- led High Level Working Group (HLWG) report approving the specific demand made by Kerala to exempt plantations, agriculture land and human habitations from Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESAs).
The delay in issuance of the draft notification on the Kasturirangan report has put the UDF government under big pressure, with the KC-M and KC-J upped the ante against the Office memorandum issued by the Centre on Kasturirangan report.
A key component in UDF, KCM has even threatened to take harsh decisions if the issue was not resolved urgently.
Nearly three million people live in settlements in 123 villages included in the ESA category by the committee and their livelihood would be in jeopardy if the report is implemented in the present form.
