Malappuram: Union Minister E Ahamed will be back in the fray in Malappuram Lok Sabha seat as contestant of the India Union Muslim League, the second largest partner of the Congress-led UDF in the state.
Party's sitting M P E T Muhammad Basheer has been re-nominated for the adjoining Ponnani seat.
The decision was taken by the IUML's secretariat meeting and it was announced by party state president Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal.
Briefing the press about the decisions at Panakkad here, party leader P K Kunjalikutty said that Ahamed can play a pivotal role in the centre after the elections.
“There is need in the country to bring secular parties into the power again. Ahamed is a leader who has worked at the centre for several years. So, he can play a prominent role in leading the nation,” Kunjalikutty said.
P V Abdul Wahab and Abdul Samad Samdani also attended the press conference along with Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal.
Though a section in the party had lobbied against Ahamed, the leadership arrived at the conclusion that his candidature was inevitable in view of his vast experience in Parliament and national standing.
Ahamed, national president of the party, is contesting to the Lok Sabha for the sixth consecutive time.
