Vizhinjam project: Central, State govts get Green Tribunal’s notice
cancel

Chennai: The National Green Tribunal has issued a notice to the Central and State governments on a plea seeking to cancel the Environmental sanction given to the Vizhinjam port project.

The bench has also sought response from the Pollution Control board and Vizhinjam Sports Authority.

The petition was filed by activists of an NGO and Joseph, Christopher and Mikel, the natives of Poonthura. In the petition, it was pointed out that the project would create serious environmental problems and the Environment ministry had given the nod without making a proper study.

The case will be considered again on March 25.

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on Jan 3 had accorded environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance to a Rs.5, 000-crore deepwater container transshipment port to be set up at Vizhinjam.
