Kalpetta: State Forest Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Thursday said it was possible that the fire was man-made as it broke out in nearly 15 places.

“Strict action will be initiated against the culprits,” the Forest Minister told reporters here after visiting the area.

A preliminary inquiry by the forest department into the incident had found that the fire was man-made, raising suspicion it could be a deliberate act of sabotage.

Meanwhile, a farmer was arrested on charges of attempting to spark the fire at Mananthavadi in Wayanad. The farmer Balakrishnan, a resident of Edamana, told forest officials that he had set the forest on fire to save his farm land.

Apart from Thirunelly forests, wildfires were also reported from Pozhuthana and Thariode under the Kalpetta range in the South Wayanad Forest Division, Ponkuzhi in the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, and the herbal garden in Ambukuthi under the Begur range in the North Wayanad Forest Division.
