Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Biodiversity Board on Friday released the maps marking the Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESA) in the State on its official website.

The maps were prepared by the Board based on the draft notification on the Kasturiragan report with the technical assistance of the state remote sensing and environment centre.

Sources said the maps identifying the ESA in seven districts were released this morning while the maps of the other districts would be released this evening.

The amended ecologically-sensitive areas (ESAs) in the State was mapped using colour codes ranging from dark green to red, each colour representing green zones, water bodies, residential areas, plantations and farm lands.

The total area under ESAs is around 9993.7 sq kms, of which forest land is around 9,107 sq km and grasslands/barren land 856.7 sq km. The recent draft notification of MOEF had exempted 3,115 sq km of ESAs in the state.

Environment Ministry Tuesday had issued the draft notification on Western Ghats declaring an area of 56,825 sq km of the hills as ecologically sensitive.
